Through weekly check-ins with the digital commercial director, my team and I built out the ad placement requirements which would ultimately determine the layout and grid of the website as well as the location of the player.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Nothing would be judged or criticised, it was purely an exercise to get as many ideas out as possible. Within a few hours, we were able to build on each other’s ideas and come to an interaction model that worked from a UX point of view and also enabled the commercial team to place their valuable ad inventory. And finally we landed on an alternative location to house the player that met the users’ needs as well as the business.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Projects - Mobile First Media Website</image:title>
      <image:caption>The designs needed to be fleshed out into multiple permutations as well as phases, as Engineering could not implement everything by the set go live date. It was a collaborative exercise across multiple teams (Engineering, UX and Product) to split the designs into MVP and post-MVP. We then proceeded to export everything to Zeplin and walkthrough with the engineers so that they knew clearly what to implement next.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>The way I encourage my stakeholders to get involved in the customer feedback sessions is by taking notes and “insights” on post-it notes and sticking them on the relevant designs, which I previously printed and attached to the walls of the observation room. Through the testing process we were able to refine the design and eliminate ideas that didn’t gel well.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>So the challenge in this project was different – unlike other projects where I could start with a clean slate, I was given the MVP designs, user tested but somewhat incomplete. My focus became finishing the UX work, cleaning up the design file, enhancing the visual design and helping the software engineers begin dev. Once the dev work began I started to build out the non-MVP features of the app, working with the branding agency and marketing to define the visual language of the app. This became a very large project and I focused on this app full time for a year.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Even simple tasks such as a change of address or bank account required the user to print a form, fill and certify it, then post or scan it in. It was eye opening to see the back office staff would actually then print out the scanned forms from users (or open letters posted in) and manually update their systems. This was inefficient and had room for human error, not to mention that back office staff wanted to do more engaging and value adding work.</image:caption>

The biggest user group were Plumbers so it was decided to focus on that persona initially, release, test and learn. <image:title>Projects - Service Design: Trades for My Home</image:title>
      <image:caption>Market research is also important, given no one in the project team had building experience, so as a team, we also spent time researching competitor services. Some colleagues needed tradesmen for work around their homes, which was the perfect opportunity to test out these competitor services.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Projects - Service Design: Trades for My Home - Customer Journey Mapping</image:title>
      <image:caption>In order to outline more vividly the proposed service journey for our users, to the stakeholders, with the team, I mapped out the customer journey map. It was necessary to look beyond the digital booking experience (which was our main focus given the limited influence we had over the tradesmen service), and map out the journey from start to finish.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Projects - Service Design: Trades for My Home - Service Blueprint</image:title>
      <image:caption>With the help of the team, we created a physical service blueprint, and mapped on it, every positive and negative feedback received from customers. The negative feedback was displayed using red post-it notes, and very soon it became clear where most of service problems lay.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Projects - Service Design: Trades for My Home - Service Improvements</image:title>
      <image:caption>As we continued to improve the MVP, it was obvious that the tradesmen who were to deliver this service needed on boarding and training. We created service charters, spent time off sight at the builders venues and worked more collaboratively to iron out service inconsistencies.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>While the wireframes had been ‘approved’ by the project team, I felt the wireframes alone were not communicating the full scope of what we were designing. <image:title>Projects - Music Streaming App - Interaction Model</image:title>
      <image:caption>A critical requirement from the business was that the new app UI could be easily redeployed for Android, once the iOS app is released with ‘minimal’ changes to the interface. There was no budget to create two user experiences (a iOS and Android specific).</image:caption>

      <image:title>Projects - Music Streaming App - Collaboration with Visual Design</image:title>
      <image:caption>Parallel to the wireframing process, the UI designer and I worked closely to build the product vision. I shared samples of good design (both visual and ux) with her, and she did the same, so that we were always in-synch.</image:caption>
    </image:image>

      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/63a285ad367114720d253470/56a935c9-b468-4797-a235-be4eaa4af217/tree-test-v3.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Projects - Music Streaming App</image:title>
      <image:caption>Conclusion: Users could not find their way through the tree, due partly to cluttered labeling. For example within the saved music space, there was conflicting menu items such as ‘My Music’, ‘My Playlists’ and ‘All My Music’. User’s preferred to ‘search’ for a track than to dig deep through layers of UI to manually find it. The Offline function was hidden below 4 layers UI. International music was hidden below 5 layers of UI.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Projects - Voice Experience Design</image:title>
      <image:caption>But the fact remains that with GUI testing, the visual indicators on the interface give users clues, which do not exist with VUIs. This adds a certain level of difficulty to interactions with smart speakers, as the possible paths for the user are unknown and hence could be numerous.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Projects - Voice Experience Design</image:title>
      <image:caption>Throughout my career I have always built strong relationships with my colleagues in engineering and know first-hand the importance of both disciplines collaborating. But in the delivery of multiple skills and actions by our team, I have come to see this as non-negotiable. While in some companies I’ve seen design and engineering teams work in silos to deliver digital solutions, I see no possible way that a successful voice project can be delivered in this manner.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/63a285ad367114720d253470/ba5ee2fe-7877-44cc-92d2-0bfb5cd95c25/VUI-flows.png</image:loc>
      <image:title>Projects - Voice Experience Design</image:title>
      <image:caption>This leads to quality prototypes where often the end user was not able to articulate if they were hearing a simulation or the real live action/skill. The prototype helped us quickly iterate and refine the voice experience, without needing engineers to hardcode any solutions before we were ready. After internal guerrilla testing, the VUI flow was improved further and the voice engineer began development.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Projects - Voice Experience Design</image:title>
      <image:caption>I expect it will be some time before end users are comfortable speaking to “smart” speakers and begin to learn that secondary apps (such as Nova) must be requested directly. And perhaps user testing these experiences will start to feel more natural.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Projects - Voice Experience Design</image:title>
      <image:caption>In order for listeners on smart speakers to become aware of our competition and enter through a conversation only, it was necessary to run ads that were interactive. This was also a world first and this functionality generated tremendous interest from the commercial team as they could sell it to clients easily. Further investigation revealed that users would need to be signed-in for the smoothest entry experience, which led us to the account-linking feature. Without account-linking, competition entry participants could not be identified should they be winners.</image:caption>
